With the e-bike to the beach IJmuiden aan Zee

The IJmuiden aan Zee beach is located in front of the Seaport IJmuiden marina and is relatively easy to reach by car or public transport via the Strand IJmuiden aan Zee sign.

On the beach there are the beach pavilions of Zeezicht, Zilt aan Zee, Noordzee, Zuidpier and Makai Beach, which are mostly open all year round, even when there is no swimming season, because the location of the south pier creates a wave current that is ideal for wind and kite surfing is. Which doesn't deter people who are active in sports, even in the cold. Since we were about to return home, we wanted to spend a few more hours on the beach (also to enjoy some of the local delicacies), even if the temperatures hardly allowed swimming.

De Sport Camping Amsterdam - cycle paths far away from the roads

ijmuden strand 03From our location at De Sport Camping Amsterdam we had chosen a route that would take us as far away from the main roads as possible to the beach at IJmuiden. A first tour towards IJmuiden took us to the Nordzeekanaal and thus to the N202, which mostly ran parallel to the canal and the road. The drive through IJmuiden was interesting, but we would rather go further afield. A tour of about 26 kilometres to the beach.

ijmuden strand 04The first section parallel to the N200 in the direction of Amsterdam Style Outlet was a bit annoying, especially since the expressway in the town of Halfweg had to be crossed, but only for about 2 kilometres. You then reach the train station, cross the tracks and be careful, after about 200 meters you should turn left onto Houtrakkerweg. After another 800 meters, turn left again into Spaarndammerdiek to the town of Sparndam, which is absolutely worth seeing and should be used as a stopover.

ijmuden strand 05We have already put an article online about Spaarndam. The journey then continues along the Slaperdiekweg and Vondelweg to the village of Velserbroek, where at the Hotel De Weymann you go onto the Broekbergenlaan and Hagelingerweg through the small town of Driehuis onto the Herrenduinweg to the beach area of Ijmuden. It sounds complicated at first, but it can be easily navigated using Google maps and leads across the country, with little contact with the cities and streets, and here you also avoid the city of Harlem.

Ijmuden strand 06Before you reach the harbour area of Ijmuden, there is a small circular route through the dune landscape that you shouldn't miss, as the view of Lake Kennemermeer and Lake Duinmeer in the dunes is also excellent. On the way back we drove this loop, which is also the starting point for numerous hiking routes and viewpoints through the dune landscape.

By the way: In the dunes in front of the beach area are the remains of the Atlantic Wall, a series of different bunkers from the Second World War. A bunker route leads interested visitors through the dunes along the bunkers towards IJmuiderslag.
