Vintage cars in photos - a meeting in Burgholzhausen
- Written by Portal Editor
Almost secretly, quietly and quietly, numerous car and motorcycle products from the former GDR have matured into serious classics that are becoming increasingly popular with classic car fans.
So it is always more than just a joy to see these classics at meetings like this one in Burgholzhausen, even if there are now some West German classics among the vehicles on display.
The number of visitors clearly shows the admiration for these classics, which are increasingly also found on the road. Sometimes obstructive and smelly, but classics that are worth looking at.
If the inevitable conversations with the exhibitors on site also result in one or two acquaintances due to similar hobbies, all the better.
Despite shortages and government restrictions, the car manufacturers in the GDR produced a whole range of very attractive vehicles well into the 1960s that did not have to fear comparison with Western goods.
The author Eberhard Kittler has staged some of the most famous classic cars of the GDR against the most authentic backdrop possible and published them in a book.
Brilliantly photographed and staged with great care, the dreams of yesterday and the day before are paraded here once again.
The "Swallows" are currently in vogue on the streets, at least in the East, often used by schoolchildren on their daily commute to school.
The Trabant is also still well-liked on the road, sometimes with surprising speed, good cornering or simply "topless" for road service.
In Berlin there is even a city tour in the original GDR vintage car, the Barkas, to the most impressive sights of East Germany's past.
During the tour, the interested passenger listens to real GDR hits and marvels at sightseeing stops such as the TV tower, the Brandenburg Gate and the government district.
The highlight of this tour is an informative walk to the Invalidenfriedhof with the original Berlin Wall and a visit to a former border watchtower.
On the way, you will learn a lot about the historical background of the individual stops and enjoy a crazy vintage car tour in the iconic capital of Berlin.
