The sultanas present their new play "Alte Lieder" in Regensburg
- Written by Portal Editor
They have been a fixture in Neukölln for years and this is exactly where they fit in: Die Sultaninen, the theater group around Hülya Karci. They have their roots in Germany, Turkey, Iran, Poland and Lithuania.
In 2006, the seniors met for the first time through the "Theater of Experiences". Since then, this somewhat unusual, intercultural theater community "Die Sultaninen" has been meeting regularly for rehearsals in the Neukölln neighborhood center at the Körnerpark.
Solidarity between generations
For their intercultural work and their contribution to solidarity between the generations and members of different cultures, "The Sultanas" u. received the prize of the Neukölln Citizens' Foundation. In addition to theatrical performances, the sultanas also offer theatre workshops for all age groups.
With your forum play “We stay all?” you did more than 20 performances all over Berlin in one year and reached more than 1,500 spectators.
Her intercultural plays revolve around multilingualism in our everyday life and the constant attempt at dialogue between cultures.
The group's repertoire currently consists of four pieces:
"Wandering Stars" - a piece about a partner search by three women over 60.
"We are all staying!" - the piece deals with the urban problem of gentrification, which particularly affects the population of Neukölln.
"Old Songs" - the players tell their migration stories based on old hits
13 seniors deal with their own migration history on stage through hits, which were their favourite songs at the time. Migration also takes place in one's own country and requires courageous confrontation with the problems that confront them. And so our seniors tell amazing stories of how, accompanied by unforgettable hits, unparalleled courage and Brechtian courage, they set out to master their lives despite the adverse circumstances.
