Our visit to Izmir this time was also to take us to Karşıyaka, one of the two largest districts of Izmir, because we accepted our friend Mehmet's invitation for tea, after our last meeting was almost 6 months ago.

Mehmet is a qualified gunsmith with his own production facility in Beysehir, where we also met.

Driving around the bay of Izmir towards Foca / Çanakkale

On this cold but sunny day we wanted to meet at the beach cafe "Yasemin", one of two cafes run by the Karşıyaka municipality. So the first thing we had to think about was how we would get to the agreed meeting point, because our starting point was in Buca on the outskirts of the Izmir district. We had the options of driving into Konak and then taking the ferry to Karşıyaka or using the new motorway that goes around the bay of Izmir towards Foca / Çanakkale. We decided on option two, as a visit to a well-known furniture store was also on our agenda.

The journey on the really modern motorway was very interesting, as the high route along the mountain slopes gave us an excellent view of this enormously expanded part of the Izmir district. Investments in modern residential and office buildings have been huge in recent years, without forgetting the infrastructure. Today there is a hyper-modern subway that connects Karşıyaka with the other parts of Izmir. The further expansion of the subway is progressing rapidly. The piers, from which the shuttle ferries to Konak run at regular intervals, also leave a very well-kept, clean impression. In general, the whole city looks so clean as if it had been specially spruced up. The coastal road runs along the shore at a reasonable distance, so that there is enough space to create a well-maintained beach promenade. A little later we arrive at the “Yasemin” cafe, where Mehmet and his family are already waiting for us.

The cafe is very busy, but there are so many tables and chairs that it is no problem to find a sunny spot. It is great to be able to enjoy your tea outside in January. Tea and cake are quickly ordered and we immerse ourselves in conversations that also help us get to know Karşıyaka. We learn that Karşıyaka is now the most populous district of Izmir after Konak and that it has almost completed its urbanization with 99% occupancy. What is special here is that the development has also grown accordingly in the way of life and in all services. Today it is said that the general standard of education of the people of Karşıyaka is the highest in all of Turkey, which of course means that commerce, culture and education will continue to grow in almost all active areas, including tourism. We enjoy the hours of sunshine with a wonderful view of the Bay of Izmir, the Konak opposite with its interesting skyline, the ferries arriving and departing and the hustle and bustle of the people.

The rapid increase in the population and the high level of education of the citizens of Karşıyaka have also led to a small anecdote based on the steadily growing self-confidence of the people of Karşıyaka. Having become an almost independent city, they also want to achieve complete independence from Izmir and receive their own city rights. This could also be expressed in their own vehicle registration number. For fun, the vehicle registration number 351/2 is circulating in reports and stories for vehicles owned by people from Karşıyaka.

Mehmet explains further details about the Karşıyaka district and we learn, among other things, about the house of Zübeyde Hanım, mother of Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Atatürk), who lived here for the last two years of her life in 1922 until her death in 1923. The house belonged to the family of Latife Uşşaki, Atatürk's wife, has now been restored and is located on the main shopping street Çarşı. There are also some wonderfully restored houses from the Ottoman era that invite you to visit. In general, the entire area of ​​the shopping mile is very inviting and encourages you to visit and linger.

We also decide to visit the second city-owned cafe in Karşıyaka, because Mehmet explains the magnificent view of the entire city and the surrounding mountains. And he is right. After just a few kilometres back towards the motorway, you go up a mountain, at the top of which a large, publicly owned cafe and restaurant invites you to linger. Unfortunately, too many households are still using their stoves in the evening, so that huge clouds of smoke are already spoiling the otherwise great view. There will certainly be another visit up here, because you can already imagine the atmosphere of the sunset. Karşıyaka, we'll be back.
