CDU/CSU group against tightening control of Internet

The law to tighten control over the Internet, which has just been passed in Turkey and also signed by President Gül, is being accompanied not only domestically by renewed, massive protest actions in Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara, but also internationally there has been very strong criticism.
Although President Gül is also calling for improvements to be made in some points, it remains to be seen whether these will be implemented. The CDU/CSU parliamentary group in Germany also spoke up and called the Internet control law "unacceptable". A press release by the European policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group Michael Stübgen states:
"The law that allows the Turkish authorities to shut down social media and websites critical of the government remains unacceptable - even if President Gül has announced improvements. Anyone who disregards freedom of expression, which is one of the most important democratic principles of the European treaties, can not become a member of the European Union It is time for the European Union to finally draw the necessary conclusions and suspend the ongoing accession negotiations with Turkey.
We have to admit that Turkey, under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is moving further and further away from European standards in terms of freedom of expression and freedom of the press. Erdogan's dealings with demonstrators and critics of his policies are in stark contrast to the calls for stronger support for EU accession, which he raised again during his recent visit to Germany."
After the events of the last few months in Turkey, this is certainly an easily understandable statement, which only leaves us hoping that the legislation on data storage in Germany, especially this parliamentary group, will be measured with the same standard and data will only be stored and used in concrete cases of suspicion. A mandatory requirement for upholding the rule of law must always and everywhere be a judicial order.
