Start of the nature film cinema in the "Embassy of Wild Animals" in Hamburg - once a month with NDR productions.

The successful NDR nature documentaries are coming to the big screen: in Germany's first nature film cinema in the "Embassy of Wild Animals" of the German Wildlife Foundation in Hamburg. From September 11th, selected nature films will be shown there every Wednesday at 7 p.m. - once a month they are productions from the NDR. Afterwards, the filmmakers or employees from the nature and species conservation of the German Wildlife Foundation are often available to answer questions and discuss.

Red deer take you on their adventures

rothirsche 01The first NDR nature film will be shown on September 18th in the "Embassy of Wild Animals": "The Secret Life of Red Deer" by animal filmmaker Axel Gebauer. The documentary also shows previously unknown details from the life of the kings of the forests in the varied landscape of the Saxon and Brandenburg Lausitz. Director Axel Gebauer will be there and give the audience interesting insights into his work. Dr. Andreas Kinser, Head of Nature and Species Conservation at the German Wildlife Foundation, will speak about current challenges for the red deer in Germany.

First nature film festival about Europe's native nature

rothirsche 02From February 2025, the nature film cinema will present the competition entries from the "Official Selection" of the European Wildlife Film Awards every Wednesday. This nature film competition will take place for the first time next year. It is the only film award in the world that focuses on Europe's nature. The festival's prizes, worth up to 15,000 euros, will be awarded in six categories - Best European Film: Wildlife, Best European Film: Biodiversity, Best European Film: Nature Conservation, Best Short Film, Best Story and Audience Award. This audience award is sponsored by the NDR - and who receives it is decided by the viewers in the nature film cinema after all the entries have been shown there. It will be awarded for the first time in February 2026.

rothirsche 03The "Embassy of Wild Animals" is a project of the German Wildlife Foundation. It consists of a 2,200 square meter permanent exhibition, a learning workshop and Germany's first nature film cinema.
