With Wolfgang Dorn to the Güver Canyon near Antalya

Once again, author Wolfgang Dorn, art travel guide to Central Anatolia (see article in the portal) travelled to Turkey with a small group, an opportunity that we wanted to use to meet him.

So, we first went exploring in the ancient city of Termessos before the group gathered for a typical Turkish picnic in the newly created recreational area on the Antalya - Korkutelli road.

And we were invited!

Busy hands prepared a delicious salad from the fresh vegetables and herbs that had been brought along, and there was bread and fruit for dessert, and even a bottle of wine had been thought of.

After the strenuous tour through Termessos, it was clear that the participants were looking forward to a short break in the shade of the pine trees, so they quickly became engrossed in intensive conversation.

A little later, however, we were to take another walk opposite the picnic area, where we were to go to the Güver Gorge, which the locals often refer to as the "Grand Canyon of Antalya". National pride is certainly a bit of an exaggeration here.

Nevertheless, we were deeply impressed a little later by the view into the dizzying abyss and the magnificent mountain panorama in the background. The gorge, which is up to 115 meters deep and around 4.5 km long, offers a truly magnificent picture.

Like a green ribbon, the Karaman River meanders between the steep rock walls through the gorge that separates three mountains from each other.

It is hardly possible that this harmlessly rippling body of water was responsible for the formation of the canyon an estimated one million years ago.

It took that long for the Güver Canyon to form as the rock was washed out by the river.

The Güver Gorge is located in the Düzlerçamı Forest, a natural pine forest with many walking paths. At every bend in the path you will find a new backdrop, shady trees with many native plants alternate with a bizarre rocky landscape.

From some places along the canyon, you have a magnificent panoramic view down to the city of Antalya.

Is your interest piqued? Drive from Antalya towards Burdur (D650), shortly after the zoo (Antalya Hayvanat Bahçesi) turn left towards Korkuteli (D350). After about 15 km look out for the signs to the Güver Canyon (Güver Uçurumu).
