Christmassy Naumburg - Christmas in the courtyards and cellars
- Written by Portal Editor
A very special experience takes place in Naumburg during Advent: "Christmassy in the courtyards", the title of which should perhaps be expanded to include the words "and in the wine cellars".
On this first weekend of Advent, 26 Naumburg courtyards open their doors and offer Christmas delicacies, art and crafts. Due to the long tradition of winemaking alone, it is the wine cellars in particular that make these days so attractive.
A short excursion into the history of Naumburg winemaking
Winemaking in the Saale-Unstrut region has a 1000-year tradition. Winemaking was mentioned as early as 998 in a deed of gift from Emperor Otto III. The monks of the Cistercian monastery of Sancta Maria Schulpforta, founded in 1137, further developed winemaking. It is believed that in the 16th century, wine was grown on an area of around 10,000 hectares in the Saale-Unstrut region.
The Naumburg Winegrowing Society was founded in 1835. With the founding of the German Customs Union in 1832, protective tariffs within Germany were abolished. This meant that significantly higher quality wines from other regions could be imported into the Saale-Unstrut region at reasonable prices. The members of the winegrowing society worked successfully to improve the quality of their own wines, to develop special varieties and to train local winemakers.
Landscapes with vineyards, steep terraces, centuries-old dry stone walls, vineyard houses and river valleys characterize the Saale-Unstrut winegrowing region. As is typical for the region, the wines of Saale-Unstrut are characterized by a delicate and fruity bouquet with mineral nuances. Weathered shell limestone soils, but also red sandstone, loess clay and copper slate can be found.
In the river valleys of the Saale and Unstrut, “warm islands” ensure a particularly mild microclimate. The average annual temperature is 9.1 °C and the sun shines for around 1600 hours a year. With around 500 mm of rainfall per year, the wine-growing region is one of the driest in Germany. This means that the yields per hectare are relatively low, and not just in years of drought.
The historic spots in Naumburg’s city center with their large wine cellars are particularly reminiscent of this history. As every year during Advent, let yourself be seduced by the Christmas magic of the numerous lovingly decorated courtyards and cellars in Naumburg’s city center, which await you with precious items and delicacies, art and crafts to admire and give as gifts.
