Station 48 - Horster Ruhrbrücke campsite

While looking for a campsite in the Ruhr area to explore local attractions and other tourist activities, we came across the small, idyllic "Horster Ruhrbrücke" campsite, which is located directly on the Ruhr and therefore also directly on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path.

A good starting point for the planned excursions by bike, but also for hikes in the region, which are mostly easy to reach by bike or public transport.

To the campsite at the Horster Ruhrbrücke

As already mentioned, the Horster Ruhrbrücke campsite is located directly on the Ruhr on a meadow area that slopes slightly towards the Ruhr, divided by three lanes, which are only lightly paved. Since the green areas have to be mown by the campers themselves or not, mowing is at the camper's discretion, and the plots are not really marked. There are some long-term campers who attach great importance to English, closely-cropped lawns, while others are more into a wildflower bed and leave the green areas untouched. A colorful mix in the design of the site, as well as in the guests themselves. In addition to the permanent campers, there is space for day guests or, better, overnight guests, who arrive and use the site in a tent, camper van or caravan, depending on their own taste.

Please note: There is no electricity supply on the site!

Almost all permanent campers have equipped themselves with photovoltaic systems and corresponding battery storage, which is almost standard for camping travelers these days. Cell phones and other battery-operated equipment can be recharged in the bathrooms if necessary, which are located in the back of a private house on the opposite side of the street. This may put some people off if they have to cross the street to wash or do the dishes.

Unlike many sites in the Ruhr area, day guests are always welcome at the "Horster Ruhrbrücke", especially if they are traveling by bike. Whether the equipment is transported in large panniers directly on the bike or the guest arrives with the more common "bicycle caravan", as long as there is space, every guest is welcome. How often had we asked in vain for just one night at different places and how often had we been turned down.

Bicycle: Ruhr Valley Cycle Route connects the Sauerland with the Ruhr metropolis

No other river in Germany combines (industrial) culture and nature in such a small space and over a length of almost 240 kilometers. Starting from the source of the Ruhr at the Ruhrkopf near Winterberg, the most diverse experiences are strung together like a string of pearls all the way to the Rheinorange in Duisburg. The "Horster Ruhrbrücke" campsite is almost in the middle, so that tours by bike along the Ruhr are possible in both directions. Which destinations there are to visit depends on the very different interests of the holidaymakers themselves. Here are just a few of the destinations we have cycled to so far:

Ruhr viaduct and Hohenstein hydropower plant

Cycle tour to the Burgaltendorf castle ruins from Essen-Horst

With the Ruhrtal ferry boat to the castle ruins Hardenstein

Kettwig - rural, idyllic gem on the Ruhr river

The Ruhr Valley Cycle Route is also a hiking trail and can be seen as a starting point for a variety of tours. Since April 2006, the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route has run for 240 kilometers from the source to the mouth. The signposted route runs mostly near the river along the valley floor. It can often also be used to connect the journey by bike and then to the destination on foot. Here are some examples of this:

Ruhr walk – between wild romance, industrial culture and thoughts

New Isenburg - impressive destination on the Baldeneysee

Short walk along the Kemnader lake - spring air lures!

Hike to the Volme-Heights-Trail next to Witten

Hike to the Berger monument near Witten

The Ruhr - an option to spend the day on the water

Of course, the Ruhr Valley has an important function as a recreational area, especially for the Ruhr area, especially on the water, like the numerous providers of canoes and paddle boats at Camping Horster Ruhr Bridge. A wide range of water and other sports are practiced on the river and the reservoirs. Numerous canoe and rowing clubs are based on the banks. Sailing is possible on the lakes and rowing, paddle or pedal boats can be rented. There are also places on the banks for beach volleyball or as a starting point for windsurfing. The flat paths around the reservoirs are a popular destination for inline skaters in the Ruhr area, especially in summer. However, the Ruhr is not a bathing water, as treated wastewater continues to be discharged via the tributaries and some sewage treatment plants. Nevertheless, many people swim in the Ruhr.

The city of Bochum has designated an official bathing area near Dahlhausen train station in summer 2022, which can be used depending on the water quality. You can also swim at the Seaside Beach in Baldeneysee. A third bathing option was opened near the Mendener Bridge in Mülheim in July 2023.

Easily accessible activities from the Horster Ruhrbrücke campsite

First and foremost, we should mention the railway museum in Bochum-Dahlheim, which can be reached on foot in just a few minutes along the cycle path. For fans of old steam locomotives, this is a really interesting museum that offers a wide range of hands-on activities.

It's hard to believe that climbing in nature is also possible in the Ruhr area. There are climbing routes near the Hardenstein castle ruins that are popular with visitors.

Camper route destinations - open all year round (except for pitch 48 "Horster Ruhrbrücke")

The Horster Ruhrbrücke campsite is only open from April to October, as there is a risk of flooding from the Ruhr in the winter months!

Attractive destinations as a stopover, even for longer stays, combined with creative outdoor opportunities!
